The Vienna Actionists Günter Brus, Otto Muehl, Hermann Nitsch, and Rudolf Schwarzkogler are internationally recognized pioneers of Body Art, as they used the human body with its functions directly and unreservedly as artistic material. Thus, the body emerged for the first time as the exclusive medium of expression in art. Each of the four artists developed their own unique approach.
For Nitsch in particular, the bodily-sensory experience of all aspects of life was at the center of his entire oeuvre. His concept of the Orgies Mysteries Theatre was based on a synesthetic perception of art, involving the interplay of multiple senses to create a new experience of existence. Through the use of real animal blood, entrails, and paint, intense sensory impressions were evoked, pushing the participants of his actions to their limits.
In a joint workshop, the Vienna Actionism Museum (WAM) and the Nitsch Museum are offering an exclusive and unique opportunity, in collaboration with the artist Guadalupe Aldrete and longtime assistants of Hermann Nitsch, to go beyond traditional art appreciation, sharpen the senses, and directly involve the body in artistic expression.
