At the WAM Talk “Vienna Actionism and Women,” Eva Badura Triska, Chief Curator of WAM, and Rosemarie Brucher, a specialist in performance art, discussed this complex and challenging topic through the lens of the current exhibition “WHAT IS VIENNA ACTIONISM?”
For Julia Moebus-Puck, the artistic director of WAM, engaging with the role of women in Vienna Actionism is of the utmost importance: “It is absolutely necessary to recontextualize the works of these artists from our contemporary perspective. However, it should not be forgotten that these actions must also be understood in the context of the zeitgeist of that time.” The artists aimed to directly reflect the conventional gender roles of their era through the objectification of women’s bodies, thereby questioning these norms. Their goal was provocation and critique of the prevailing conditions at the time.
Subsequently, moderator Nina Schedlmayer discussed individual works from the current exhibition with the two panelists from the perspective of “Vienna Actionism and Women.”

Four Actions
With its second exhibition, the WAM is now going into greater depth. The opening exhibition WHAT IS VIENNA ACTIONISM? first offered an overview of the multi-layered developments of this movement in the 1960s, whereby the individual actions were only presented with exemplary photos. Now, under the title FOUR ACTIONS, an exhibition series is being launched that presents selected actions with all the available historical material. In this way, it will be possible for the first time to understand the actions in all their detail. The aim of the exhibition is to open up new perspectives on the reception of Vienna Actionism through the precise examination of individual actions.
